1797 - 1801 John Adams The 1796 election took place in an athmosphere of mutual distrust between Jefferson, candidate of the Republican party and Adam's for the Federalists. Adams won the election. His Vice President was Thomas Jefferson. John Adams's Inaugural Address During Adams presidency the socalled XYZ affair poisons U.S. relations with France (1797).
